On the road again -
Just can’t wait to get on the road again.
Goin’ places that I’ve never been.
Seein’ things that I may never see again
Just can’t wait to get on the road again!
Inspired by the Willy Nelson classic, my wife and I are hitting the road again this morning on our way back to our San Francisco condo for what we hope, with the exception of a brief trip or two back east, will keep us on the west coast at least until the spring thaw arrives back in New England.
If you are not a regular reader of this blog, then you probably don’t know that we bought a condo in the City by the Bay in 2010, and have since made this cross-country journey many times. Door-to-door, each of these trips took about 12 hours, and involved taxicabs, airports, and airplanes. All of these trips, with one notable exception, were unremarkable. The one flight we made with our cat, Colbert, was the one notable exception. It was, in a word, a cat-astrophe!
And now we are once again braving a cross-country trip with a pet, but this time we are accompanied by our 70 pound dog, not our 20 pound cat. And this time we won’t be flying, we’ll be driving. Me, my wife, and our dog in a Mini Cooper for two weeks.
My son and I did take a vehicular road trip two years ago. It was a four-day endurance drive in a loaded-up 14-foot U-Haul truck, but our objective was to get from Worcester to San Francisco as quickly as possible. It also involved only members of the human species.
In this case, my wife and I are taking a leisurely, two week drive from coast-to-coast along a scenic, northerly route until we hit Oregon. Then we’ll be heading down the coast to our destination.
As we were packing up over the weekend for this journey, we both admitted that we were looking forward to this adventure with a bit of excitement and a lot of trepidation. That’s because we’re not sure what to expect over this upcoming fortnight. Will the trip with the three of us...my wife, our dog, and me...in a Mini Cooper be a breeze, or will we have more on our hands than we could possibly have imagined?
Later today, if all goes well after a long day on the road, we will we arrive safely at our initial destination, a quaint, pet-friendly bed and breakfast outside of Buffalo, NY. We hope to get a good night’s sleep so that the next morning we will be back on the road again...just like Willy Nelson.
C’mon baby let the good times roll!
